Abstract: | A critical issue in strategic management research is identifying the factors affecting firm performance. This paper deals with the influence of managerial team over the behaviour and performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). By handling top management team (TMT) characteristics (herein as: chars.) as predictors of a firm's strategic orientation (as: str-orntn.), it is herein aimed to provide a more complete understanding of how the chars. of managerial teams shape decision making processes and SMEs' behaviours to successfully compete in less generous environments. Based on primary data on managerial chars. and firms' behaviours of a sample of 295 SMEs, this paper's results confirm that a firm's str-orntn. having a mediating role in explaining how SMEs' performance is determined by TMT chars. |
