Abstract:Companies say they want international experience for their top executives. But the record shows expatriate managers are not regarded so highly within their companies when they return. The potential integral role the expatriate can play in "globalizing" a firm's operations led to explore the following questions: 1) What is the impact of international assignments on managers' careers? 2) What is the "value added" of an overseas assignment to a firm? 3) What policy and strategy implications can be drawn from the response to these two questions? One of the most frequently mentioned criteria for success in international business was cross-cultural communication skills. Such skills are only developed through actual exposure to foreign peoples.
