Abstract:This study investigates how various strategies of 87 medium- sized enterprises in different parts of the German economy affects their internationalisation. Our findings indicate that a market-driven approach is a key element for successful internationalisation. Moreover, a step-by-step approach appears more beneficial than radical change. Specifically, while uncertainty is being lowered, resources are used more effectively. The findings also suggest that a fully owned subsidiary may help internationalisation and primarily rests on personal contacts and trust. The paper concludes with practical implications for managers and decisionmakers.
