Abstract:The term competency is interpreted and analyzed. It is argued that competencies are dimensions of behaviour that are related to excellent job performance, ways of behaving that some people carry out better than others. Competency is a set of behaviour patterns that the incumbent needs to bring to a position to perform its tasks and functions with competence. Several requirements relating to organizations' competency lists are outlined and it is shown that it is vital that organizations ensure that their competency lists be well researched and robust.
