Abstract:Quite unreasonably, the recession did not make an exception of smaller practitioners - it simply hit them rather later. Firms have come under considerable downward fee pressure, faced with some clients going bust and the rest expecting to pay less for the same work as last year or threatening to go elsewhere. General practitioners have had no option but to reduce their margins considerably in order to retain sufficient work at a time when there simply has not been any new work around to replace for lost clients.
