| Abstract: | Hong Kong is still the regional financial and services centre par excellence, and is now, more than ever, a gateway to China. The darkest prognosis for Hong Kong as it reverts to Chinese sovereignty is a crisis of confidence once the tiny, thriving crucible of capitalism is swallowed up by communist China. But while democratic politicians predict the demise of civil liberties, democracy and media freedom, commerce sees in the handover the two words that the Chinese character for crisis comprises (ngai kei) danger and opportunity. |
