Abstract:The pressures of globalization and the growing expectations that companies will act in a socially and environmentally responsible manner have placed the issue of human rights on the corporate citizenship agenda. This paper provides a current perspective on the debate around corporate responsibility for human rights, with specific reference to the mining industry. The issues considered are: a. the characteristics of the mining industry that make human rights an important issue for the industry, b. the manner in which international human rights norms apply to the mining industry, and c. the specific dilemmas facing the mining industry, including the use of security forces, the business case for human rights protection and the industry’s role in public policy.
