Abstract:This paper examines the concept of corporate social responsibility and the ambiguity that has surrounded its meaning since its introduction in the 1930s. In an attempt to add a degree of clarity to this worthwhile debate, this paper contends that corporate social responsibility consists of two related but distinct models. The first is the citizenship model, which views the company as an individual that should be encouraged to exceed its minimum legal obligations. The second is the compliance model, which views the company as a public enterprise capable of exercising significant power that can only be legitimated through the use of compulsory schemes.
