Abstract:The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has been called the most sweeping civil rights legislation since the Civil Rights Act of 1964. It mandates employer accommodation of individuals with disabilities, and those accommodations have the potential to cost millions and change the ways people work. Unfortunately, the law's employment provisions are far from clear and it may be years before the legal fine print is sorted out. To be in compliance with the ADA, business owners must make their premises accessible to the disabled by removing architectural and communication barriers. Construction of a future job site or a place of public accommodation must be made readily accessible as well. All violators face civil penalties.
