Abstract:Taiwan has been applying to become a part of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) for three years, and may succeed by the end of 1993. Some say its about time, because by most visible standards Taiwan is a developed country. Its GNP is over $200 billion, its per capita GNP is $10,000, it has the largest foreign exchange reserves in the world and the highest annual growth rate of any country in the post-World War II era. But four key trade issues, including intellectual property rights and tariff and non-tariff barriers, still stand in the way.
