Abstract:Total quality management (TQM) is the key competitive strategy for firms in today's global marketplace. The same is true for the emerging market-driven economies of Central and Eastern Europe. A close look at General Electric's Tungsram plant in Hungary, Polaroid's production of circuit boards in Russia, and the McDonald's franchise in Moscow prove that TQM can take hold in these countries. After defining what TQM has come to mean in Western firms, strategies and practices that might prove most useful in Central and Eastern Europe are listed. Five important steps in the process of implementing TQM are identified. Some of the serious obstacles to success are also considered.
