Abstract:In the Western European economies the cyclical situation recently has become even more unstable due not least to the exchange rate turbulences and the therefore increased uncertainty about the external sector and the policy environment. It is quite probable that the tendency toward lower interest rates has started earlier than previously thought - with large differences from one country to another -, while fiscal policy in some cases should enforce its tightening efforts. On balance, aggregate demand in Western Europe should be tangled by policy changes only gradually in the short term. However, in the course of next year impulses from the ongoing monetary easing should materializ on a larger scale.
