Abstract: | This is the application of an instrumentalized version of the theory of visual syntax by Saint-Martin on 35 pictures of the automatic movement in Quebec. Automatists liberated thought and imagination from every predetermined scheme and created surrealist art. The instrumental version of Saint- Martin's theory, due to M. Carani establishes scales in every dimension of a picture like form, organisation, volume, chromatics, texture etc. (2O dimensions) all of which go from figurative to non- figurative. The overall points given to individual pictures characterize their distance from pure figurative and pure non-figurative art. |
