Abstract:All organizations function within a changing and dynamic environment. Major changes in the external environment can force organizations to look internally and question their identity and purpose. The concept of organizational identity influences all aspects of an organization's operations. A thorough understanding of an organization's raison d'ĂȘtre is a vital component of strategic decision making. This case study looks at Australia's Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, particularly events surrounding its incorporation in 1997, a landmark event that forced it to deal with new and changing external environment as well as an increase in the number of its stakeholders. During this process, its identity, structure and operations have all been thoroughly analysed. The resulting community ownership strategy drives all of the orchestra's decisions with a strong influence on its activities.
