Abstract:In this study on cooperation among Italian museums and theatres, the author uses multiple case studies to define a typology of cultural networks. The results show two very different kinds of network. The first, defined as a vertical network, is centralized, formalized and loosely connected, often motivated by the survival needs of its member organizations. It allows members to obtain cost advantages, which is in fact the main reason for aggregation. The horizontal network, in contrast, which applies to theatres only, is motivated by the possibility of improving overall quality, innovation and exchange of resources.
