Abstract:Based on qualitative interviews (n=64) within five U.K. organizations having started a large-scale restructuring, middle managers are argued to be currently experiencing significant work and personal pressures. While middle managers report increased levels of autonomy and skill, are often well rewarded, and frequently seem motivated, it is suggested that their fast growing complaints on working hours, role pressures and promotion prospects have worrying implications for the future performance of U.K. industry. It is concluded that such restructuring, and the personal managerial experiences resulting from it, is in accord with many, but crucially not all, of the trends predicted by Bravermanian labour process theory.
