Abstract:This paper explores media discourse around two UK-German intercultural business controversies: the German company Mannesmann's takeover by the British company Vodafone in 1999, and the British subsidiary Rover's disposal by its German parent company BMW in 2000. It is examined how economic, political, and cultural discourses relating to globalization were used strategically by actors to handle with these crises to legitimize i. a neo-liberal transformation of the German model, and ii. a 'rebranding' of the U.K. model in moving from a concentration on manufacturing to a service economy.
