Abstract:A new gold field was discovered in Papua New Guinea, perhaps the last in this century. The significance of the gold has dramatically increased since the collapse of Bretton Wood system. As a consequence, it production is still increasing. Notwithstanding the hectic fluctuations in the gold price, two things are certain: 1) production costs around $220/ounce guarantee profitable production and 2) gold is again an important part of the international system. A novel feature of the golden fever is the insatiable public demand for coins.
