Abstract:This paper aims to find out who in American universities is patenting. In order to achieve this, data provided by the 1995 Survey of Doctorate Recipients is examined using a zero-inflated negative binomial model. Also the generalized method of moments estimation of count data models with endogenous regressors is used to estimate the patent equation. The results of the study reveal that the number of patent applications is strongly effected by work field and work context. The findings also suggest a notable and positive connection between patents and the number of publications.
