Abstract:Recently, total quality management (TQM) has been championed as a strategic tool for efficient and competitive management of organizations. Yet many organizations have been frustrated because they have failed to achieve the long-term, substantial gains that once seemed possible. Scholars and practitioners blame these failures, among others, on a focus on incremental performance improvements rather than on major breakthroughs. Major breakthroughs are likely to occur in organizations that are willing to take advantage of their information technology (IT) and systems to support a work environment that is conductive to innovation (or creativity).
