Abstract:On the basis of empirical datafrom the electronics industry two questions are dealt with: (1) How does the number of product variants impact the profitability of the company? (2) How do successful companies manage the number of product variants compared to less successful companies? Regarding the first question, a positive impact of the number of variants cannot be identified, but the magnitude of variants leads to disadvantages with respect to productivity and costs. Regarding the second question it turns out that successful companies manage product lines and product design in a more focused way than less successful companies. Moreover, they manage in a more goal oriented way , they apply tools of cost management more frequently , take more intensively advantage of organizational segmentation, and they avoid the trap of relying on automation investments
