Abstract:Asia is reeling from a slump in global electronics demand. An upturn is expected, but the players may find that the game has changed. The gloomy stories reverberate from Singapore to Seoul. In July, the Island republic's disk-drive maker Maxtor Peripherals, part-owned by Hyundai Electronics of South Korea, laid off 800 workers. Sound cards pioneer Creative Technology reported losses of $32.8 million in the first three months of 1996. Rival Aztech was $22.9 million in the red for the year's first half. In Panang, Malaysia's Silicon Valley, Hewlett Packard shut down its disk-drive factory.
