Abstract: | Furniture and main electrical gooods gained volumes sales in 1997 from consumer spending inflated by windfall receipts from financial developments quite unconnected with the market themselves. The impact of desperate competition from overseas goods on prices was most evident among electrical goods, but furniture sector manufacturers have also come under pressure from imports. Consumers are increasingly well-informed and a large part of the market continues to resist attempts to move durables prices upwards, even as a more affluent minority trades up to the latest fashions in colour or styling or new tecnological developments. Reported improvements in the housing market are to some extent artificial and localised. |
