Abstract:Businesses, particularly in high-tech industries, are entering into a growing number of alliances for a variety of compelling reasons. Through alliance partnerships, they may gain competitive advantages such as greater speed to market, lower costs, and shared risks. They may gain access to outside knowledge and abilities ranging from product development and technology to management and marketing. However, a partner may also be seeking access to a firm's internal knowledge and capabilities, is the firm may find itself facing what Quintas, Lefrere, and Jones (1997) call the "boundary fox"-alliance partners seeking knowledge and capabilities from external sources, while simultaneously facing the risk of exposing their own vital internal knowledge.
