Abstract:Joint ventures (JVs) and alliances can deliver more shareholder value than mergers and acquisitions (M&As) can, but getting them off the ground can trip you up in unpredictable ways. The launch phase is usually not managed closely enough which can result in strategic conflicts. There are challenges like building and maintaining strategic alignment across separate corporate entities, creating a governance system promoting shared decision-making and oversight btw. parent companies, and managing the economic interdependency btw. the corporate parents and the JV. A successful launch requires taking the following approaches to staffing and incentives: 1. choose your organizational model carefully, 2. make people want to join the team, and 3. get commitments from parent company staff.
