Abstract:Acquisitions and alliances are alternative growth strategies, that is, the decision to do one usually implies not doing the other. If companies actually factored that into their decisions, they would make better deals. The two alternative strategies differ in many ways: Acquisition deals are competitive, based on market prices, and risky while alliances are cooperative, negotiated, and not so risky.
