Abstract:The purpose of the article is to contribute to the research of firm boundaries by developing a new multi-level framework that emphasizes the roles of resource-based view and social network perspective in the boundary choices of companies. The authors argue that boundary choices should be viewed through the effects of internal and external resource factors (dyadic differences, firm characteristics and network attributes) on the need for external resources and risk control. A study to support the framework is conducted in the United States, examining companies' boundary choices under two conditions: initiating external relationships or pursuing alliances or acquisitions.
