Abstract:A set of formal models is developed to analyze the performance of coordination structures that appear in a wide variety of systems, including human organization and computer systems. First, detailed definitions of a set of generic structures, that represent common ways of coordinating human activity, are developed: centralized and decentralized forms of markets and product and functional forms of hierarchies. Then quantitative, primarily queueing, models are developed that allow the performance measures of these generic structures to be ranked order in terms of macrolevel efficiency measures such as production costs, coordination costs and vulnerability costs.
