Abstract:The Four Seasons hotel chain founded in 1961 has 23 hotels /16 in the USA/, 5000 guests per day, 10,000 employees, a revenue and a net income in 1988 of 520 million and 11.2 million USD, resp. For continually improving their customer service, Four Seasons decided to use open systems, on UNIX-based systems. The UNIX security issue could become more important as the hotel chain grows. The IS profile of Four Seasons is described, and the test results of the new system are described. The system runs on Hewlett-Packard HP 9000 under HP-UX operating system. Communications between headquarters and individual hotels is now via Hayes V-series modems with effective throughput of 9600.
