Abstract:The large public corporation is described as an unrivaled creator of wealth and jobs in our century. The role of boards is discussed. Explosive developments shaking the corporate world are analysed: information technology, flexible manufacturing, global markets, workplace democracy, and pension-fund capitalism. The competitive advantage of small business is highlighted. Possible strategies of large corporations are described, investment policy is examined. A variety of measures is recommended to reinvigorate corporate boards to take a more active role in the direction of the companies whose stock they own.
