Abstract:Kazakhstan is known to be a country where heavy drinking and high level alcohol consumption prevails, but lack of reliable information makes it difficult to assess the current trends in alcohol consumption. However there exist some evidence of changing drinking habits which relates to an alteration in ethnic profile and lifestyles. This paper examines the alcohol consumption patterns, the drinking related problems in Kazakhstan and government's reactions and policies towards the issue. The findings are based on documentary research, visits to organizations and interviews.
