Abstract:To many managers staff selection is a time-consuming burden accompanied by unwanted interruptions of critical business activities. Throughout the 1980s, many advances have been made in personnel selection by occupational psychologists in the USA, Canada and Continental Europe, but not so many in Britain. The critical trends and themes in the advances in systematic staff selection over recent years are summarized. The review is sectionalized to cover: 1. pre-screening techniques - self-assessment and biodata (short for biographical data); 2. assessment techniques - interviews, psychological testing and assessment centres.
