Abstract:For more than two centuries economic theory has been based on the core assumptions that economic agents maximize their self interest and that they are rational. These assumptions of avarice and ingenuity have sometimes made economics unpopular among scholars from the humanities, and have begun to be questiones even by economists. A significant literature has developed an altruistic economic behavior, and a new sub-field of economics, socio-economics, has raised additional questions about whether people always maximize their self interest in a rational manner.
