Abstract:This study investigates whether small business owner's gender affect credit access. Contrary to traditional literature, this study introduces the group of equally owned firms. By taking a unique approach, this paper presents an empirical study comparing the credit access experiences of equally owned firms to those of female and male-owned firms. The study uses various measures of credit constraints. The results suggest that female-owned small businesses (FOSB) experience greatest credit constraints. In spite of that, when only successful applicants are considered, the results are different suggesting that FOSBs actually experience the least difficulties. Also, it is found that equally owned businesses are not equal mixture of their man and female counterparts, which affects the credit experiences.
