Abstract:The paper compares ownership structures among the 100 lagest non-financial companies in Denmark, France, Germany, Gerat Britain, the Netherlands and Sweden. Relying on existing theories a set of hypotheses are formulated to explain corporate ownership by company size, industry and nation. To study the complexity of European ownership patterns a set of comprehensive and empirically useful ownership categories are constructed based on existing theories. The statistical tests indicate that there are nation specific differences in ownership modes of the largest companies. The nation effect cannot be explained solely by differences in industrial structure (company size and industry composition).
