Abstract:The banking sector in central Europe is too small and there are too few of them to meet the growing demand for capital from corporate and retail customers and they are not big enough to survive without outside help if the states are going to join the European Union. According to the western analysts there is only one way to deal with this problem which is to sell the banks to foreigners. Actually, compared with the situation of five years ago, the banking sectors in Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary have improved enermously. Banks must now observe strict lending limits and reserve requirements, and can act as brokers and asset managers, and develop their corporate and retail services.
