Abstract:Going into the 1970s, management was functioning much as it had since the century began. Coming out of the decade, it was changed forever. Baby boomers, the energy crunch, and technological advances were among the forces compelling the new management philosophy and techniques discussed. Managers will have to recognize that they may need to abandon formerly successful methods and areas of operation. A from of "zero-based" management is suggested. This view of management requires regular re-evaluations of programs, products, people, and budgets within the context of the organization's future direction. Three areas of management are examined in detail: management of technology, management of growth, and management of information.
