Abstract:Manufacturing systems with machine capacity fluctuations modelled by a Markov process with weak and strong interactions are studied. Such systems arise naturally when some machines fail and/or get repaired at much faster rates than some other machines. The state of Markov process can be divided into groups such that transitions among states within each group occur more frequently than the transitions among the states belonging to different groups. It is shown that the original problem can be approximated by a problem with a reduced number of states, each of which is formed by aggregating the original states within a group.
