Abstract: | "Mini data centers" are growing rapidly across many organizations. The success of these dispersed computing environments will depend, to a large extent, on how they are managed today to avoid possible disastrous problems in the future. The lessons learned from the evolution of the large mainframe data centers of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s should be applied to today's "mini data center" environment. It is shown how Mapco Inc. has evolved from a highly centralized mainframe orientation to a fully integrated, multiple platform environment. The issues that are addressed cover: production scheduling, staffing, daily operation, security, monitoring of supplies, preventive maintenance, procedures/policies guidelines etc. |
