Abstract:As head of research labs from 1975-1985 and then as CEO, P. R. Vagelos turned Merck into a pharmaceutical powerhouse through a series of breakthrough drugs. In today's managed care environment, Vagelos believes, the company that has the best chance of succeeding is the one that controls the information flow from doctor to patient to pharmacist to plan sponsor. As a physician and as a manager , Vagelos knows about the desire to achieve breakthroughs, the need to focus , and the importance of placing big bets.
