Abstract:Today's leaner, flatter organizations emphasise their managers' ability to manage people and encourage greater personal responsibility - empowerment - as a key to their competitive succes. This may sound simple, but many managers find the transaction required in these "soft skills", and what is essentially a fundamental change of management style, difficult in practice. As employees have become more accountable for their performance, managers have become more accountable for developing and supporting their employees through what is now generally accepted as continual change.
