Abstract:The Science "Policy Forum" article co-authored by Arrow et al. (1995) is a milestone in the struggle to bring together the voices of economists and ecologists on how sustainability might be achieved. With both "free trade" and "pro-growth" economists arguing that the pursuit of their causes is not only compatible with but essential to the attainment of sustainability, some common sense, good science, and voice for the common good are clearly in order. The policy advice is strongly rooted in the carrying-capacity metaphor , the idea that environmental systems have limits beyond which unfortunate, irreversible consequences occur.
