Abstract:Since its founding in 1946, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has worked to develop common standards for quality control procedures in manufacturing, trade, and communications. Although 97 countries are members of ISO, organizations must apply individually to be certified as meeting the various sets of standards. While certification involves some expenses, it facilitates global trade and is playing an increasing role in agreements among some importers and even whole trading blocks, such as EC and NAFTA.
