Abstract:There are 3 groups of subjects that are primarily interested in good management of the banks: i) supervisory authorities , ii) owners and iii) managers.Supervision of the banks plays the role of the macroeconomic management , and its objectives are primarily the financial stability, transparency and fair competition. The owners of the banks are primarily interested in profit maximisation while the managers pursue additional goals of image building, social influence and non-monetary benefits. In Slovenia, the ownership structure of the banks still does not allow for efficient control of managers by the owners.Supervisory control, on the other hand, is quite developed and modelled according to international standards.Management in the banks is concerned about efficient asset-liabilities management, maximising of portfolio returns, risk management and development of new financial products.Slovene banks are in these areas still quite undeveloped and rely essentially on traditional activities, i.e. deposit taking and loans. With the growing sofistication of financial sector, management of the banks will become more complicated and more similar to banks of developed market economies.
