Abstract:Based on Gutenberg's production function it is shown that using exactly two different intensities (rates of production) during a predetermined production time to produce a given amount of parts may be less costly than using exactly one intensity over time. The cost function for one machine and for several machines is derived. In case of non-contionuos unit cost functions as they occur for a set of fixed production rates to choose from a given machine, adapting to different quantitives fo products requested may be optimal either by varying production time, production rate or by using two different production rates. Optimal adaption strategies can vary repeatedly from one strategy to the other for quantities from one to maximum capacity opposed to the usual case.
