Abstract:China's blunt stance on the political aspects of Hong Kong's handover is hurting confidence. Business is no longer unanimously optimistic about the future. It was an unlikely forum for political debate, but two of Hong Kong's best-known plutocrats used an April 12 business conference to offer divergent views of the colony's 1997 handover. In time-worn Chinese fashion, the messages were delivered in code. Raymond Chi'en likened Hong Kong to "a fine claret about to be transferred from an oak barrel into a bottle", adding that "fine wines are vulnerable to mishandling during shipment or in unfriendly storage conditions".
