Abstract:A day after Washington threatened trade sanctions against China for failing to stem copyright piracy, European Union Trade Commissioner Leon Brittan made it clear the United States was on its own. "It was not for us to support them," Brittain told Reuters news agency. The EU, he said, would be most unlikely to follow suit. The U.S. was not pleased. Though Brittan recently signed an agreement under which the EU will train Chinese officials in enforcing higher standards for protecting intellectual property rights, Washington is dismissive.
