Abstract:Technical progress is the biggest driving force of China's growth of grain production. During the early period of economic reform (1978-1984), technical advances contributed to 48 percent of rise of rice production, and became a key factor of increase of grain production in the middle of and late period of reform (1984-1992). The rate of contribution of technical advances exceeds 100 percent. Demand for food is influenced by population growth and determined by urbanization and growth of the market which also change the structure of food consumption.
