Abstract:Japan, the United States and the European Union are challenging Indonesia's national-car project in the World Trade Organization. Jakarta has some explaining to do. In late August, 4 000 new imported "Timor" cars were parked in neat rows on vacant ground just off the access road leading from Jakarta's Sukarno-Hatta International Airport. Car dealers in the capital waited eagerly for customs to release the Timors, which at half the price of most locally assembled cars were expected to be wildly popular.
