| Abstract: | The result of a case study in a company which produces high- tech reproduction machines are presented. For production planning and control the company runs a computer based system which relies on the MRP II concept. The subject of our investigation is a mulling machine in a closed shop environment. The setup-costs and -times of the machine are sequence dependent. To improve the scheduling of the milling machine a randomized sampling method has been developed. The application of the algorithm reduced the number of delayed orders substantially and lead to a more efficient capacity utilization. In addition, by a computational study we show that the proposed random sampling method is very efficient in comparison with the approach of Fleischmann for the discrete lot-sizing and scheduling problem with sequence setup costs. |
